Jeff sat in the back seat of his corvette, his head resting back against the
seat as he listened to the song playing over the stereo and the loud laughter
from inside made him sigh heavily. Everyone was in there having fun, celebrating
the engagement. He still couldn’t get over the idea of Tyler and Shan getting
hitched. Deep down, he knew he still loved her and he wasn’t strong enough to
face everyone, especially when walking in there meant celebrating something he
didn’t believe was right.
The sound of the door clicking open had Jeff look into the front seat. And there
she was. Tyler.
He hung his head as she turned the radio down a little.
The best thing about tonight's that we're not fighting
Could it be that we have been this way before
I know you don't think that I am trying
I know you're wearing thin down to the core
“Why are you hiding out here?” she asked. Jeff shrugged. He wanted to spare
himself the humiliation of saying something embarrassing that he’d regret later
on. His mouth had gotten him into trouble once already. “Shannon was looking for
you.”
“I said things I shouldn’t have.”
“Mm. Really?”
They weren’t fighting. He looked at her, fighting the urge to lean forward and
pull her into a kiss. Their banter was the simple truth. “Did I ever tell you,
you have one hell of a mean punch?” Remembering the night she’d left after
catching me with Beth.
But hold your breathe
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you
Over again
Don't make me change my mind
Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true
Because a girl like you is impossible to find
You're impossible to find
A soft chuckle from her and Jeff found himself wondering where Shannon and Beth
were in that moment. Shannon was probably drinking till he didn’t know which way
from what and Beth was more than likely talking with some friends about whether
or not she could trust him.
When he felt her move, Jeff glanced up only to have her lips brush against his.
She’d moved quicker than he thought. “About that kiss the other day-” he
started.
This is not what I intended
I always swore to you I'd never fall apart
You always thought that I was stronger
I may have failed but I have loved you from the start
“Jeff-” she trailed off as he threaded a hand into her hair at the base of her
neck. What was happening to them? “Kiss me.” He didn’t know if it was that she’d
been drinking or if she truly was telling him to kiss her, he did.
Oh, But hold your breathe
Because tonight will be the night
That I will fall for you
Over again
Don't make me change my mind
Or I won't live to see another day
I swear it's true
Because a girl like you is impossible to find
It's impossible
So breathe in so deep
Breathe me in
I'm yours to keep
And hold on to your words
Cause talk is cheap
And remember me tonight
When you're asleep
Slowly brushing his lips against hers, Jeff watched Tyler’s eyes slip shut. He’d
fallen head over heels for his ex all over again and nothing had seemingly
changed between them in that second as she leaned in closer to him. “Ty.” She
was straddling his lap and Jeff felt more exposed than he ever could. If Beth or
Shannon found them, they’d both be dead, him more so than her though. But she
stopped his thoughts mid way when she pushed her lips onto his.

He still loved her. Probably more than he ever did, but he’d hurt her. He’d
punched her the other week. Jeff hadn’t meant too, and he hadn’t me- “Come
inside, for old times sake?” she asked suddenly, pulling back and looking down
at him.

Jeff stared up at her. She’d used his weak spot to her advantage. Swallowing the
lump in his throat as he tried his best not to agree, he shook his head. “Don’t
you think its better I stay out here?”
“No,” she replied. He smiled a little. Tyler’s stubborn streak. Lifting one
shoulder, he glanced at the house through the heavily tinted window. “I think
you should come in and have some fun.”
“And end up saying something that’ll result in a punch-up with Shan,” he added.
After a minute or so, Tyler sighed and opened the door as the song started to
drift off. “Fine, suit yourself.”
Jeff would’ve stopped her, but she’d slammed the door before he could safely do
so without getting his fingers injured. Jeff was falling for his ex, and hard.
He’d loved her all those years ago, hurt her and now, he had to live with the
knowledge that the girl he was falling for over again was going to be marrying
his best friend.
